In 1928, WBRC radio assets were purchased by Hanna’s first husband M.D. Smith and program director and vice president of radio was her son. Later M.D Smith III decided to acquire the WAFG television network in the area of Huntsville in 1963 and he organized a group named Smith Broadcasting. He changed the station call letters to WAAY-TV and it was carrying a three-hour broadcasting service each day. The primary affiliation of WBRC was adopted by the NBC network and the secondary affiliation was taken by ABC programming along with the DuMont Television network.
